Acute and Emergency Care

A Cochrane Thematic Group

The Cochrane Acute and Emergency Care Thematic Group is dedicated to advancing research, improving clinical practices, and enhancing patient outcomes in critical areas of healthcare.

About us

Around the globe, people face injuries and acute illnesses or emergencies every day, often suffering or dying needlessly due to a lack of access to basic, timely, life-saving interventions or appropriate healthcare.

Our group strives to address these urgent challenges through rigorous and coordinated efforts. Our network consists of experienced Cochrane review Groups and Fields, all united by a shared vision to lead and manage high-quality systematic reviews in first aid, emergency, critical care, and anaesthesia. By focusing on pre- and in-hospital treatment, we aim to create a comprehensive source of knowledge and experience to help disseminate vital healthcare interventions.

Our plans

Our strategic objectives focus on ensuring that Cochrane evidence synthesis in acute and emergency care is timely, relevant and impactful.

We are planning around several key areas:

  • Coordination: By facilitating collaboration among researchers, clinicians, and other stakeholders, we aim to reduce research waste and promote efficient resource use. Our efforts will transcend traditional clinical groups to prioritize topics crucial for patient outcomes.
  • Impactful and relevant: We are committed to impacting acute and emergency care, as well as anaesthesia and critical care, by identifying knowledge gaps and setting priorities that ensure high-impact evidence synthesis.
  • Training and education: Our Thematic Group will play a pivotal role in training authors and editors, and fostering a robust network of professionals to support emerging research in these fields. This will include helping to strengthen capacity in low- and middle-income countries.
  • Networking: Building on existing relationships, we intend to strengthen and expand our network of editors, review authors, and policy users. This collaboration will enhance the development of complex reviews and support innovative methods in evidence synthesis, knowledge translation and priority setting.
  • Published reviews: We are committed to producing and disseminating high-quality systematic reviews in all areas related to acute and emergency care. Our reviews will focus on timely and effective interventions that have significant beneficial impacts on patient outcomes, bridging the gap between pre-hospital and in-hospital care.
